A UTBK tryout platform graded with Item Response Theory

A UTBK/SNBT tryout web app with IRT-based grading, so a student's score reflects question difficulty rather than a raw count of correct answers.

The challenge

Grading on raw correct answers does not reflect real ability, because every question carries a different level of difficulty.

Simultaneous tryouts mean thousands of students sitting an exam at the same moment — the system has to hold up at peak load.

Our approach

We implemented Item Response Theory for scoring, so each question's weight is derived from how the whole cohort answered it.

Exam sessions were built to survive a dropped connection: answers save periodically and students resume without losing work.

Peak load was rehearsed with a simulation of thousands of concurrent candidates before the first live tryout.

The outcome

More than 20 tryouts ran, with over 1,500 registered students.

System availability held at 99.9% across the exam period.
